Salter Lecture 2023 for Quaker Yearly Meeting
The Salter Lecture is an annual event organised by the Quaker Socialist Society.
This year it was given by environmental philosopher Rupert Read and coincided with Extinction Rebellion’s major climate protest.

Local environmental groups come together to celebrate Ada Salter and help nature, plants and wildlife on our doorstep.
Free animated history tour
A free animated tour with actors who bring to life the story of Ada Salter.
Take a journey through history as part of the Salter Centenary project. Walk the streets where the Salters walked, and hear what happened there a hundred years ago.

Carbon Literacy Training
In memory of Ada Salter’s pioneering environmental work, we offered a free-of-charge session of Carbon Literacy training.
The day course covered the basics of greenhouse gases, climate change, and the impact of human actions on the planet. It then considered how to build a low carbon society.
Participants agreed that declarations of Climate Emergency are no use without real change. Everyone needs to be informed and motivated to save our beautiful planet!
Dulwich U3A Salter Bike Ride
Dulwich U3A (University of the Third Age) has a popular Bike Group led by energetic convenor, John Clements. In spring John joined the Southwark Cyclists’ bike tour of the Salters’ Bermondsey. Enthused by the story of Ada and Alfred, he arranged an exclusive Salter tour for his Dulwich members.

Red Flag Over Bermondsey!
This was the last chance to see Lynn Morris’s moving one-woman play about Ada Salter. It tells the inspiring story of Ada’s early years in Bermondsey and the tragedy of losing her only daughter to scarlet fever. The show was completely sold out, and Lynn’s brilliant performance received a standing ovation from her enthusiastic audience.
The performance was filmed by Olivier Stockman and is now available on his Sands Films website or on Eventive (good for large screen TV).
Tree walk with Paul Wood
For the centenary Paul Wood is leading two walks celebrating Ada’s heritage of trees in Bermondsey.

Town Partnership Day
For this centenary year 2022 Ada’s two towns meet again in Bermondsey. We have invited the Mayor of Raunds, their Temperance Brass Band, the Local History Society and other residents to join us for a celebratory day.

In honour of Ada and Alfred, Salter enthusiasts are leading a leisurely ride from Bermondsey to Fairby Grange in Kent (returning by train).

History visit to Fairby Grange
The centenary year includes a special history outing for Salter enthusiasts to visit Fairby Grange in Kent. This beautiful country house was bought for the Salters in 1916 by wealthy Quaker donors.
Cycling the Salter sites of Bermondsey!
All cyclists were invited to join an easy-paced ride, passing nine sites associated with Ada and Alfred Salter. Planned and led by Bruce Lynn, this Salter Centenary Ride was a special addition to Southwark Cyclists regular programme.
Public Health away-day, with a Salter vision.
Inspired by the centenary, Southwark’s Public Health department is basing its away-day for senior management on the Salters and their vision as pioneers of public health.

Illuminate Lantern Processions
On 4 March two magical processions walked through the darkening streets of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. Hundreds of excited children carrying amazing lanterns met up in Southwark Park for music and dancing around the bandstand.
Charles Ammon: work, health and politics in the post office
This event featured three talks, covering Ammon's long relationship with the Salters, the trade union movement of which he was an outstanding leader, and the health and welfare of the workers he represented.
