Guided walk for the Centenary

Oonagh Gay and Sue McCarthy run Capital Walks in London, featuring guided tours of Bermondsey. This year they are offering special themed walks to celebrate the Salter centenary.

The tour tells the story of Ada and Alfred Salter and how they transformed the slums of Bermondsey in the early 20th century, making it world-famous for its health service, trees, flowers and garden city cottages.

It visits sites connected with the Salters and shows how their legacy lives on in the model working-class housing designed by Ada and the church which hosted their memorial services.

The narrative also investigates the social struggles which went on behind the scenes to achieve the Salters’ ideals.

Sue has a long-standing interest in women’s history and social history. Oonagh specialises in uncovering the hidden tales of municipal pioneers and radical movements.
