Primary school lessons

The Salter Centenary project has produced a unit of work for primary schools to help teach their pupils about Ada and Alfred Salter. This is now available free-of-charge for teachers to use (see link below).

Comprised of detailed planning, lesson ideas and practical tools to engage learners, this unit of work is intended for children aged between 7 and 11 years old.  It is designed to fit the history objectives of the National Curriculum key stage 2 (years 3–4 and 5–6), with ideas for cross-curricular links in subjects such as literacy, art and design and PSHE.

The idea came from Gary Jenkins, Vicar of St James’s Church and Chair of Governors at St James’s Primary School. It was taken up enthusiastically by Karen Metcalf, Minister at Haddon Hall Baptist Church and former primary school teacher, who has written the lessons in collaboration with Sarah Mason, a teacher at Riverside Primary School in Bermondsey.

The story of Ada, Alfred and daughter Joyce is fascinating in many ways for youngsters growing up in the same area where the family lived a hundred years ago. Yet we found there was no relevant material available on the internet specifically aimed at children.

This unit of work encourages local teachers to take their classes to see the Salter statues on the riverfront and use the visit as motivation for learning about the Salters and 20th century Bermondsey.
