Blue Plaque for Ada!

We are delighted that English Heritage has now installed a blue plaque at 149 Lower Road SE16, where Ada lived when she first came to south London. (Photo below.)

This terraced house was owned by the Bermondsey Settlement and used to accommodate their women workers. It is the only surviving building with a proven link to Ada, as the family home in Storks Road, where Ada cultivated her famous garden, was sadly damaged in the war and then demolished.

English Heritage invited Dame Judi Dench as patron of the Salter Centenary to be photographed holding the plaque at home in her garden. The official announcement was made on International Women's Day, 8 March 2023.
